Brehmstraße

Düsseldorf EC (1935-2006)

The ice rink at the Brehmstraße in Düsseltal district was from 1935 to 2006 the home of the DEL clubs Düsseldorf EC ( 2001-2012 DEG Metro Stars ) and is considered the most traditional of the German ice rinks. The stadium is located on the busy north-south axis Brehmstraße directly at the zoo park, where from 1876 to 1943 was the Zoo Dusseldorf. Today, the stadium is among other things the training center of Düsseldorf EC and the home ground of the youth and amateur teams as well as the indoor alternative venue for the World Team Cup in tennis.

History

Originally reckless Stadium, which provided space for 8,000 spectators in 1935 after completion, was in World War II - as the entire district - heavily damaged. After the reorganization in 1949, the stadium took 10,500 spectators and was for decades the largest ice rink in Germany, a canopy was 1969.

The Ice Hockey World Championships in 1955, 1975 and 1983, it served as a World Cup site. The Soviet coach Anatoli Tarasov said to have spoken already in September 1971 in a game his team at the Brehmstraße of the "best fans in the world ". In addition, DEG celebrated their eight German championships here. The first championship was still celebrated with a fireworks display that was fired at the stadium. After 1969 it was no longer possible because of the canopy.

After an additional construction of seat grandstands between the standing areas and the roof in the early 1990s and a conversion of a standing room area in seats at the end of the decade sums up the ice rink at the Brehmstraße after the spectator capacity was briefly increased to 11,117, now 10,285 spectators, including 6,922 standing places. The Brehmstraße how the stadium will be called for short, was the most successful periods of Düsseldorf EC, the most visited ice stadium in Germany. In the years 1986-1996 almost every home game was sold out. Often more than 9,500 DEG season season tickets were sold.

Second ice

Between 1955 and 1995 an additional non- covered, ice was located next to the ice rink for training purposes. However, this had to be shut down because of massive defects and have continued to decline and was subsequently used as a parking lot for the players. Lack of financial resources prevented a renovation or a new prompt. Only in 2004 was built after lengthy discussions, a new, well covered, ice- modern design at the same spot, so that Brehmstraße again two functional ice rinks and Dusseldorf an acceptable platform for youth work has to have in hockey junior level.

View

Despite the size of the old ice rink it was replaced during the summer break in 2006 as the home of the DEL teams DEG from the 13,400 -seater ISS Dome, located in the northern district council. However, the Brehmstraße remains a training center of the professional team and venue of all youth teams, including the DNL team.

Reason for leaving as a venue of the DEL teams was mainly the fact that the now 70 -year-old stadium in the comfort, the catering, the sanitation and the offer for the VIP audience segment compared to other DEL locations where to this time, more and more old ice rinks have been replaced by new multi -purpose arena, it was no longer competitive. In addition, the Stadium no longer met the current audience demands. Another problem is the fact that the stadium is in the middle of a downtown residential area with correspondingly tight parking situation.

Through the planning of ISS Dome was a lot of fans, a dilemma, because it was at the Brehmstraße to a place of worship of the German ice hockey, which for decades has been characterized by an uncomfortable, but very impressive atmosphere.

Farewell

The club has organized a solemn farewell to the ice rink at the Brehmstraße in cooperation with the various fan groups and clubs on 3 September 2006. So the morning started a fan - march with more than 5,000 participants and Hockey fans from all over Germany from the ice rink to pull together with bands, floats, sponsors, former and current players until about five kilometers away, ISS Dome in Rath. The move was also accompanied by an ice machine and a delegation from the archrival Kölner Haie. Many Düsseldorf citizens lined the streets of the load's path.
