Brigantine is a city in Atlantic County, New Jersey, United States. In the 2000 census, a total population of 12,594 was registered.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 25.4 km ², of which 16.7 km ² of land and 8.7 km ² ( 34.32 %) is water.

According to the census of 2000, there are 12,594 people, 5,473 households, and 3,338 families residing in the city. The population density is 756.2 inhabitants per km ². 83.15 % of the population are White, 3.94% African American, 0.18 % Native American, 5.72 % Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 4.67 % from other races, and 2.29% mixed race. 9.41% are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 5,473 households 24.0% have children under 18 years. 44.9 % are married couples living together, 11.7% are single mothers, 39.0% are non-families, 30.7 % consists of single-person households and 9.9% in people older than 65, the average household size is 2, 30, the average family size is 2.89.

20.8 % of the population are under 18 years old, 5.8 % from 18 to 24, 30.9% from 25 to 44, 25.9 % between 45 and 64, 16.6% older than 65 is the average age 41 years. The ratio of women to men is 100:95,1, for people older than 18 years, the ratio 100:92,4.

History

In 1608 Brigantine Beach is mentioned for the first time in the logbook on the ship Half Moon Henry Hudson. However, the Dutch were the first Europeans who were at the Jersey shore a sea route through the New World to the Orient. The name Brigantine comes from a type of ship that was used at that time.
