Brightwater

Brightwater is a town in the region in the north of the South Island of New Zealand Tasman. It is located 20 kilometers southwest of Nelson on the banks of the Wairoa River and on State Highway 6 The place had the 2006 census 1,794 permanent residents, a strong increase of 369 residents ( 25.9%) since the census of 2001.

History

The area has already been settled in 1843 by Europeans. Brightwater arose from the little remove Spring Grove, as the settlers Alfred Saunders built a flat mill here.

Also, the 1055 award toponym dating back to Saunders. According to one theory, the clear water of the river was the inspiration for the name. According to another, the name comes from a then-popular song " Bright Water" which proclaimed that one should not alcoholic drinks prefer the alcohol.

Economy

Most important economic activities are farm economy, dairy farming, viticulture, fruit growing and wood processing. To the place are several wineries. In Brightwater there is also an ironwork and pottery.

Sport and Leisure

Brightwaters main recreation area the Brightwater Domain is with City Hall, skate park, children's playground, tennis courts and several playing fields for ball games. The most important sports team is the rugby team Goldpine Wanderers, which is sponsored by the local woodworking business Goldpine.

Education

Brightwater has a primary school, the Brightwater School. The school had founded 1888 2010 278 students from first to sixth class.

Sons and daughters

Brightwater is the birthplace of the nuclear physicist and Nobel laureate Ernest Rutherford (1871-1937), which here is a memorial was erected.
