Brioude

Brioude is a French town in the Haute- Loire in the Auvergne region. The town has 6637 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) and is the seat of the prefecture (French Sous- préfecture ) of the arrondissements Brioude, which consists of nine cantons, it is the capital (French: chef- lieu) of the cantons Brioude North and Brioude -Sud. It is located about 70 kilometers south of Clermont -Ferrand in the Massif Central. The location on a terrace above the river Allier proved to be favorable for trade and commerce.

Brioude is today an administrative and service center for the central Auvergne and has a large school complex.

History

Two personalities have shaped the history of the place with. The first was St. Julien, a Roman soldier who confessed to Christianity, and supposedly in the 3rd century martyred here. Then the place became a pilgrimage site, of which he benefited, especially in the Middle Ages, Gregory of Tours.

In the mid-18th century it was the robber Louis Mandrin from the Dauphiné, the partially conducted its dubious business here.

Attractions

The main attraction of the place is the actually outstanding Basilica of St. Julien, which is predominantly Roman origin. This can be seen already at the outer form of the squat towers, but even more so to the Moorish arches and red-white- striped columns inside the church. On the gallery you will find interesting medieval frescoes, but rather come from the Gothic period.

The old town also has yet to have a few picturesque houses from the Middle Ages.

In Brioude is also home to the Lycée St. Etienne, the partner school of the state high school in Heiligenstadt ( Thuringia).
