British Guiana

British Guiana (English British Guiana ) was the name of a colony of the United Kingdom on the northern coast of South America. It forms since 1966 the independent state of Guyana.

Formation

At the beginning of the 17th century there were Dutchman who built first in this area on the rivers Pomeroon, Essequibo and Berbice trading post to barter with the locals. From this and from the first plantings originated the Essequibo and Berbice colonies. From 1745 on the banks of the Demerara, who was one of Essequibo, were used more intensively for the plantation economy. During the second half of the 18th century, this area was an independent character as Demerara.

Dutch Guiana

Together with Suriname, this area on the northern coast of South America under the collective term Dutch Guiana was known.

The individual areas changed from the end of the 18th century several times between the colonial powers Netherlands, Great Britain and France, the owner.

British colony

After the Napoleonic Wars, the colonies Essequibo, Demerara and Berbice fell by the British -Dutch agreement dated August 13, 1814 definitely in the UK.
