The Brønnøysund lufthavn, Brønnøy (IATA: BNN, ICAO: ENBN ) is the airport of the municipality Brønnøy in the Norwegian county of Nordland. It is located about 700 m southeast of the city Brønnøysund. Owner and operator of the airport is the Norwegian company Avinor AS. In 2008, the airport had a total of 87 247 passengers, of which 16,794 with helicopters.

History

The airport was opened on 30 June 1968. The first scheduled flight led the airline Widerøe a day later by the Twin Otter STOL aircraft on the route Helgeland.

The terminal was expanded several times. First, in 1982, to be built to serve more passengers and luggage, because the Twin Otter were replaced by the larger Dash 7; then in 2004 due to new security requirements. Finally, in 2008 a new terminal building was completed. In the same year, the new heliport was opened.

The runway had initially a length of 800 meters. It was extended in 1987 to 1000 meters and 1999 to its current length of 1200 meters.

The tower from 1968 was replaced by a new building in 2000. As of 2010, the airport is equipped with a radar.

Traffic

Widerøe offers scheduled flights from Brønnøysund to Bodø, Mo i Rana, Oslo, Trondheim, Rørvik and Sandnessjøen.

Charter flights are performed, among others, Svenska Direktflyg and Bergen Air Transport after Værnes.

In addition, the Brønnøysund is lufthavn rescue and ambulance flights as well as a base for helicopter flights used for drilling platforms.

Incidents

On May 6, 1988 fell one coming from Namsos Dash 7 from the landing approach. They crashed in poor visibility and low altitude on the mountain Torghatten. All 36 people on board were killed.
