Brock Chisholm

Brock Chisholm, CC ( born May 18, 1896 in Oakville (Ontario ); † February 4, 1971 in Victoria (British Columbia) ) was an internationally known Canadian psychiatrist. From 1948 to 1953 he was the first Director General of the World Health Organization ( WHO).

Life and achievements

In World War Chisholm served in the Canadian Army and was in France in military use. After he returned in 1917 as a decorated war veteran to Canada, he began to study medicine at the University of Toronto, from which he graduated in 1924. In the next six years he worked as a psychiatrist. According to a development he specialized in mental illnesses of children.

In 1944 he was chosen by the Canadian government as Deputy Minister of Health. From 1946 he was responsible in the preparatory work for the establishment of the WHO in a managerial position. In 1948 he was elected the first WHO Director-General. He held until the end of his term in 1953 this function.

From 1958 to 1959 Chisholm President of the World Federation of Mental Health.
