Brownea

Inflorescence of Brownea ariza

Brownea is a genus in the subfamily carob plants ( Caesalpinioideae ) in the family Leguminosae ( Fabaceae / Leguminosae). This genus is widespread in the tropical regions of America. The genus name honors the Brownea Irish physician and botanist Patrick Browne. Some species are also called "Rose of Venezuela."

Description

Brownea species grow as shrubs or small trees. The leaves are pinnate.

The flowers are borne in racemose inflorescences. Some species (for example: Brownea macrophylla) are kauliflor. The two bracts are fused. The large, showy flowers are radial symmetry, bisexual and fünfzählig. There are basically five sepals present, for example at Brownea latifolia are two mutually fused and so the impression that there were only four produced. The five petals are usually colored flashy. There are two circles, each with five stamens present. There is only one carpel available. Are formed legumes.

System

The genus was Brownea 1760 by Nicolaus Joseph von Jacquin in Enumeratio Systematica Plantarum, quas vicinaque in Insulis Caribaeis Americes ... first published. The genus belongs to the tribe Brownea Detarieae in the subfamily Caesalpinioideae within the Fabaceae family.

The genus Brownea contains approximately 25 to 30 species in northern South America (Colombia, Ecuador and Venezuela) and on Caribbean islands.
