Bruno Branciforte

Bruno Branciforte ( born November 6, 1947 in Naples ) is an Italian retired admiral. Branciforte was from 2010 to 2012 Chief of Naval Staff of the Italian Navy. Previously, he led among other things, the intelligence services SISMI and AISE.

Life

Branciforte was educated at the Naval Academy of Livorno 1965-1969. Until 1976 he served on various warships, including as flag lieutenant, and attended courses in the field of telecommunications and navigation. In 1976 he was commander of a corvette, he graduated from the Naval War College and served as adjutant to the fleet manager.

From 1979 to 1985 Branciforte worked in Naval Intelligence SIOS Marina, most recently as head of operational reconnaissance. After that, he became deputy commander of the cruiser as a frigate captain Vittorio Veneto and then commander of the frigate Aliseo. From 1987 to 1989 he was again active in the Naval Intelligence as Head of the Operations Department, after which he worked until 1992 as a naval attaché in Washington.

After his return from the U.S. Branciforte commanded at least one year the aircraft carrier Giuseppe Garibaldi. Subsequently, he attended the Command and Staff College of the Armed Forces and then took over again in command of the carrier Garibaldi. From 1995 to 2000 Branciforte worked in the Naval Staff in Rome. As head of the intelligence department (A2 ) he was involved in reforms, which thus led to the abolition of the SIOS services of the armed forces in 1997 to the creation of the Centro Interforze Intelligence (J2) and. After that he headed until 2000 nor the ( also reformed ) Planning Department of the Naval Staff (A3). From October 2000 to November 2001 he commanded as the High Seas Fleet, Rear Admiral ( COMFORAL ), after which he became Chief of Staff in the Fleet Command ( CINCNAV ). Due to the terrorist attacks on 11 September 2001 in the United States, the Italian government sent him at the beginning of Operation Enduring Freedom as a Senior National Representative in the short term to Tampa to United States Central Command.

Bruno Branciforte was in February 2004 was promoted to Vice Admiral and appointed commander of the fleet ( CINCNAV ).

On 20 November 2006 designated him Prime Minister Romano Prodi, in consultation with the opposition as the new director of the Italian intelligence service SISMI. He took office on 16 December 2006 by his predecessor Nicolò Pollari, a General of the Guardia di Finanza. By a law of 3 August 2007, the military intelligence service SISMI was replaced by the civilian foreign intelligence service Agenzia Informazioni e Sicurezza Esterna whose line Branciforte took over again.
