Badaun also Badayun (Hindi: बदायूँ, Urdu: بدایوں; Badāyūṃ̣ [ bʌd̪a ː Ju ː ] ) is a city in the north - central portion of the state of Uttar Pradesh in India. The city is the administrative headquarters of the district Badaun.

History

According to legend, Badaun was founded in the year 905. An inscription on the 12th century is dated, gives a list of 12 kings who ruled from the city. The first certain historical event is the conquest of the city by Qutb -ud -Din Aibak 1196th The city then became an important stronghold in the northern border area of the Sultanate of Delhi. The city was destroyed by a fire in 1571 and 100 years later the city's importance began to wane, as the administrative headquarters was moved to Bareilly. In 1838 the city was the administrative seat of a British district.

Badaun has 490,000 inhabitants ( 2001), which are 58% Hindus and 41% Muslims.
