Bukovce

Bukovce (Hungarian Bukóc ) is a municipality in the north-eastern Slovakia.

The population of the community consists of almost 92 % of Slovaks, Ruthenians are about 6 %. 92 % of residents gave as a confession of Greek - Catholic.

Location

The village is located about 9 kilometers northeast of Stropkov in the Valley of Chotčianka, a left tributary of the upper Ondava. The area around Bukovce belongs to Ondauer Bergland ( Ondavská highlands ), which forms the southwestern part of the Low Beskid Mountains in the east and in the Labortzer Bergland ( Laborecká Highlands ) transitions.

History

The village was first mentioned in writing in 1379 as Bokoch and was administratively divided until 1964 Veľké Bukovce and Malé Bukovce. By 1881 the place Veľké Bukovce was in the county Sáros while Malé Bukovce was in the county Semplin, then Veľké Bukovce also came to the county Zemplén. By the Treaty of Trianon, the places were part of the Kingdom of Hungary, then they came as Šarišské Bukovce and Zemplínske Bukovce the newly formed Czechoslovakia.
