The Federal Highway 43 (abbreviated as BAB 43) - Short Form: Highway 43 ( Abbreviation: A 43 ) - begins at Münster-Süd (or upgraded line Wesel St. ) and runs over Recklinghausen or Marl- Sinsen to cross Wuppertal-Nord transverse through the western Münster and the Ruhr Area. Here, it serves as a relief for the A 1 motorway, because the traffic is routed via this tangent to and from the Ruhr area.

Planning History and Building

Section Münster - Wuppertal

In the 1960s, the motorway-like replacement main road ( EB) 51 was planned between Munster, Recklinghausen, Bochum and Wuppertal. The mid-1960s, the sections Recklinghausen / Herten to Bochum- Riemke, Bochum - Riemke to cross Bochum and Münster Süd Cross were to already completed in the 1950s bypass (OU ) Münster in construction. This was followed by the launching of the distance from the intersection Bochum to cross Wuppertal-Nord and the construction of the Cross Cathedral to the AS sending.

The plan for the expansion of federal highways in the years 1971 to 1985, the section between Munster and the northern part of the dual port Recklinghausen / Herten was still included as a motorway-like state road 51, while the section between Recklinghausen and Wuppertal, the status of a highway with the internal name " A 77 " received. But the entire distance between the crosses Münster-Süd and Wuppertal-Nord in 1973 was designated as " Highway 77 ".

With the introduction of the new Autobahnnumerierung from 1 January 1975, the entire section was dedicated as A 43, with south at a later stage of the planned motorway junction Sprockhövel and the cross Wuppertal-Nord should be a change (see section "Southern Extension " ).

The final gap between AS and AS Nottuln Lavesum was closed in 1981. Thus, the highway between Münster and Wuppertal was completely passable.

The individual sections were completed as follows:

  • Münster-Süd - OU Münster: 1965 (4.7 miles)
  • Behelfsanschluss bypass Recklinghausen - AS Bochum- Riemke: 1967 (10,5 km )
  • AS Bochum- Riemke - Cross Bochum: 1967 (4.8 miles)
  • AS Witten- Heven - Cross Wuppertal-Nord: 1970 (16,4 km )
  • Cross Bochum - Witten- Heven AS: 1971 ( 5.6 km )
  • Send AS - AK Münster-Süd: 1972 (4.7 miles), including a 2.2 km long section between the Behelfsanschluss at B 235 ( old) at Albachten and the Münster-Süd, which was completed in 1968
  • Nottuln AS - AS Send: 1976 ( 5.7 km )
  • Behelfsanschluss Recklinghausen's ring road - double connection Recklinghausen / Herten ( northern part): 1976 (2.5 miles)
  • Double connection Recklinghausen / Herten ( northern part) - AS Marl -Nord: 1979 (9,8 km )
  • AS Marl -Nord - AS Lavesum: 1980 ( 9.1 km )
  • Lavesum AS - AS Nottuln: 1981 (20,8 km )

Section Münster - Gütersloh

Already in the 1960s was a highway similar construction of the federal highway 51 between Münster / St. Mauritz and Telgte envisaged, to which should be followed by a new two-lane highway connecting Telgte, Milte north Warendorf and Sass mountain. The plan for the expansion of federal highways in the years 1971 to 1985, a four-lane construction between Munster, Telgte, Sass Mountain, Harsewinkel, Marienfeld and Gütersloh as B 51, B 513 and B 64n was then provided. In Gütersloh the track in the four-lane new federal highway 61 should (later: A 47 ) open.

Mid-1970s, the schedule was amended by the First Law of 5 August 1976 amending the Act on the expansion of federal highways in the years 1971 to 1985 ( Federal Law Gazette 1976, Part I, p 2093 ). The polyline dedicated with effect from 1 January 1975 as the A43 should branch off now at Hiltrup south of Münster from the B - 51 line and south Wolbeck, Alverskirchen, Freckenhorst, north western churches, Lette, Clarholz Herzebrock north to the A - 47 Rheda connect Wiedenbrück.

This continued construction of the A 43 was abandoned with the Second Law of 25 August 1980 amending the Act on the expansion of federal highways in the years 1971 to 1985 ( Federal Law Gazette 1980, Part I, p 1614) and instead a two lane construction of the B 64n on the same route between Munster and Rheda- Wiedenbrück in order of priority I filed in the demand plan. The Third Law of 21 April 1986 amending the Act on the expansion of federal highways (Federal Law Gazette 1986, Part I, p 557 ) resulted in the cancellation of this project also. Now was the four-lane expansion of B 51 OU Munster in urgent need, to the four-lane expansion of B 51 between St. Mauritz and Telgte as further planning and construction of the new B 64 west Warendorf - thought Rheda- Wiedenbrück as further planning. The Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan 1992 followed up in this. However, the project met with protest site. Finally, the construction of some bypasses was favored. The Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan 2003, the following projects are included:

  • OU Warendorf (9.0 km, urgent requirement )
  • OU Beelen (4,1 km, also required with planning law )
  • OU Herzebrock / Clarholz (10,4 km, also required with planning law )

But here is resistance against. Thus, a " community of interest Warendorf -South " has been formed, the fights against the construction of the B 64n. In contrast, a business initiative calls for the accelerated construction of a dual carriageway between Warendorf and Rheda- Wiedenbrück as part of a powerful link the main centers of Münster and Bielefeld.

Section Sprockhövel - Leverkusen

The plan for the expansion of federal highways in the years 1971 to 1985, a cross of the current A was south Sprockhövel 43 is provided with the planned highway-like 51 B, which should be led out of the room Gelsenkirchen Wattenscheid. On the cross, another highway should connect that was provided with the internal name " A 160 ". It was planned that the A 160, the current A 1 crosses south of the junction Gevelsberg. The further course Gevelsberg, east Schwelm was provided to a cross west Radevormwald west. From this cross the A 160 should lead to Wermelskirchen and be connected to the current A 1.

With the restructuring of the Autobahnnumerierung from 1 January 1975 the new construction projects of the B 51 Gelsenkirchen received - Sprockhövel the designation A 41 At the motorway junction south Sprockhövel was after the First Act of 5 August 1976 amending the Act on the expansion of federal highways in the years 1971 to 1985 (Federal Law Gazette 1976, part I, p 2093 ) the continuation of the A43 on the originally designated as " highway 160 " line on Gevelsberg and Schwelm provided. Deviating from the previous plans, the A should lead 43 from Radevormwald ( cross with the planned A 54) Hueckeswagen, Kreckersweg or Dhünn south Wermelskirchen ( cross with the planned A 1) to Burscheid to A 1. Finally, it was intended that the A43 south of the existing route of the B lead of Burscheid 51 Leverkusen ( cross with the A 1 and A 59 ), where the A 43 should lead to the B 8. Even in January 1976, only one motorway junction was planned with the A 31 at Dhünn where the A should end 43.

However, this project did not last long. The Second Law of 25 August 1980 amending the Act on the expansion of federal highways in the years 1971 to 1985 ( Federal Law Gazette 1980, Part I, p 1614) that came from the connection Sprockhövel - parallel Leverkusen, the almost universally should be built to A 1. The Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan 1980 reflected the change in transport policy reflected in the Federal Republic of Germany. This was now under the influence of sustained citizen protests against highway new construction and financial constraints. In road report 1980, the federal government states that the project " the new conditions, particularly the current and expected future financial framework be adapted to " must. As priorities now giving greater consideration to the environmental and energy policy objectives, the intensification of dialogue with the citizens, and avoidance of parallel planning, the priority of investment in asset maintenance and modernization of the existing network including increasing the security against pure new measures apply. Even with the third law of 21 April 1986 amending the Act on the expansion of federal highways (Federal Law Gazette 1986, Part I, p 557 ) the route was not taken.

Extension

The Münster-Süd was rebuilt in 2008. The bend to the A 1 towards the north leads now two lanes on the A 1 time.

Between Recklinghausen and Witten A 43 is considered particularly jam -prone. In this section, therefore, an expansion is planned to six lanes, the construction should be carried out according to Straßen.NRW early 2013. In connection with the widening is also the reconstruction of the interchange Herne, since it due to the increased volume of traffic often comes here to return congestion. This project is very complex because on the motorway is a railroad bridge and the conversion is to take place under moving traffic as well as continuous maintenance of railway operations. Therefore, all plans must be coordinated with the Deutsche Bahn, which is why a conversion should not take place before 2017.

Traffic figures 2009

  • Münster - Ruhr area: 63,000 vehicles per day
  • Ruhrgebiet: 100,000 vehicles per day
  • Ruhr - Wuppertal: 56,000 vehicles per day

Behelfslandepiste military transport in the event of a conflict

The highway airstrip III / 5 on the A 43 was applied between the connection points Nottuln (4) and Dülmen -Nord ( 5). The highway is in this area straight and even, with removable guard rails ( including completly concrete ), set-back, side planting and will not obstacles spans (bridges or pylons ). The section should serve as a makeshift airstrip for military transport. The landing site is 2500 m net and gross 2,800 m long.

As part of a roadway renewal of the emergency landing was built back in 2002. The removable guard rails have been replaced by a normal green stripes. 2011, contained in this section have been extended parking.
