The Federal Highway 73 (abbreviated as BAB 73) - Short form: Highway 73 ( Abbreviation: A 73 ) - is a German highway that connects the town of Suhl südthüringische the Middle Franconian city of Nuremberg. It is also mentioned in the Lichtenfels- Bamberg Nuremberg Frankenschnellweg. In addition to the 70 A, it is the second completely located within the region of Franconia motorway.

The A 73 begins at interchange Suhl (A 71) and leads first through Coburg and Lichtenfels to Bamberg. The section Suhl - Lichtenfels was built as part of the road project German unit No. 16 and is consistently passable as of September 5, 2008. The new line was about 794 million euros. It has an area requirement of 1557 acres, consisting of 590 acres and 967 acres of land transport compensation areas.

Between Schleusingen and Coburg North, and between Bamberg and Erlangen, the A 73 runs parallel and close to B 4 (or the old route of the B 4).

Sections between Suhl and Bamberg

Leg Suhl Icefield

The 34- kilometer-long section of the A 73 in Thuringia has the standard cross-section (RQ ) 26 and is characterized due to the difficult topography on the edge of the Thuringian Forest by a series of large bridges. Of the 17 major bridges on Thuringian page with a total length of 6.6 kilometers, is the first south of the motorway interchange Suhl, the Viaduct Haseltal highlight. This girder bridge has a total length of 845 meters and spans the Suhl district of Henry with the former plants of Samson at a height of 82 meters in pillar intervals not exceeding 175 meters. The blue paint of the steel structure generated some debate. Construction of the section of Suhl- Schleusingen was 2003. The section to Suhl -Friedberg was opened to traffic in mid-2006, with the junction Suhl Centre was passable only in December 2007. Completion to Schleusingen followed at the end of 2006. Portion Schleusingen Icefield north was taken in 2004 in attack and given the traffic on 25 July 2008.

Leg icefield -Coburg- Lichtenfels

In December 2002, the release of the first piece of ice field north to Coburg was. The A73 leads north of Coburg to the urban area around after Roedental, Ebersdorf and Lichtenfels. The approximately three -kilometer section of Coburg to the junction Rödental was opened on 31 October 2006. Until the release of this section (up Rödental ) the transition to the B 4 served as a highway Coburg. Since then, the junction in the direction of travel Rödental is linked as a triangle with the two-lane B 4, as they are the B 999 connects in this section as you complete them with the B 4.

Since 19 October 2007, the 8.5 km long section of the A 73 of Rödental to Ebersdorf is passable. The opening to traffic of the last section between Ebersdorf and Lichtenfels and thus the overall completion of the A73 took place on 5 September 2008. The connection point Lichtenfels is linked as a junction with the B173 partially two-lane. The B 4 is connected through the newly constructed slip road ( B 289 ) with the AS Untersiemau. Between AS and AS Untersiemau Lichtenfels north to the driver provides a view of the Basilica of the Fourteen Holy. The section between Ebersdorf and Lichtenfels was controversial because the route between the nearby Bad Season stone and light rock " garden of God " cuts below Kloster Banz and the Lichtenfelser forest. In the summer of 2003, the Federal Administrative Court dismissed an action of the Union for Nature Conservation BUND and clearing the way for the execution of Mainau crossing -free.

In July 2010, a speed limit of 120 km / h was introduced on the section between the junction and the junction Lichtenfels Untersiemau for security reasons.

Leg Lichtenfels -Bamberg

This section was part of the federal highway 173 and an expanded four lanes. However, at a cost of around 50 million euros had both sides completed and the superstructure are amplified to the hard shoulder. Early December 2007, followed by the continuous identification by signs with a blue background, with the name of the connection points Staffelstein East in Bad Season Stein and Bad Season stone - North in Bad Season stone spa has changed. On 1 January 2008, the official scale-up was to the highway. Due to disagreements and jumps the operation were changed kilometers south of Lichtenfels on 4 September 2008 at the section. The chainage of the motorway starts at Suhl and ends at km 154 on the outskirts of Nuremberg.

Leg Bamberg Nuremberg

The section between Bamberg and Nuremberg was built between 1980 and 1986. The construction of the A73 near Bamberg has long been controversial because it cuts a large contiguous forest area, the Hauptsmoorwald.

Between Forchheim and Erlangen -south - center, the four-lane highway came regularly to capacity even before the completion of the connection to Thuringia with about 60,000 vehicles per day, especially during rush hour. Therefore, expanded on this leg of the hard shoulder in several stages for the third, temporary lanes. In October 2007, the developed emergency lane and the electronic traffic control equipment between Möhrendorf and Erlangen- North were completed, so that can be released after a three-month trial operation in this area since January 2008, the side strips for Befahrung and when required. From April to October 2008, the expansion to Baierdorf North was continued. The hard shoulder in this area has gone into operation after a trial phase in the blind operation in late December 2008.

In the section of Erlangen- North to Erlangen- center, the prior strip as a permanent interconnection strip is now passable. In recent years, emergency lanes have been converted into intertwining strips in the municipality of Erlangen in several sections. This was done in the fields of Erlangen- center to Erlangen- Bruck (both directions), Erlangen -Bruck until motorway junction Fürth / Erlangen (both directions) and Erlangen- center to Erlangen- Nord.

In the area of Erlangen, Fürth and Nuremberg Frankenschnellweg runs largely on the former route of the Ludwig-Danube- Main Canal. 2013 was the exit Fürth -Steinach built between exits Erlangen- Eltersdorf and Fürth- Ronhof and opened in December of the same year. This was necessary to relieve the city traffic in Steinach, since a strong increase in traffic was to be feared in this district by a newly built branch of the furniture chain Hoffner. Likewise, noise barriers were erected, which should provide for a decrease in traffic noise by 10dB. Only since 2007, the section between junctions Nuremberg -Fürth and Nuremberg port is dedicated as a county road, here is the official Nuremberg street name Frankenschnellweg also. The route is interrupted in the region of the exit Nürnberg - Gostenhof over a distance of about 500 m or three intersections or junctions that are controlled by traffic lights. In heavy traffic, this area at the ramp / Rothenburgerstraße is usually overloaded during the rush hours are formed from both sides prolonged storage areas ( particularly strong from the north / west) on the Frankenschnellweg because the throughput of the traffic light system is unable to cope with traffic. Often there is also rear-end collisions at the jam ends, which is why a speed limit of 60 km / h even from motorway exits Nuernberg West ring and Nuremberg Suedring is signposted. There were to September 2004 regular accidents with trucks that got stuck despite electronic warning signs in the area on the ramps ( a railway bridge with a height of 3.70 m). A lowering of the roadway by 30 cm has at least solved the problem with the got stuck trucks now, yet the area is during the day rather shunned by local guide. In Nuremberg is also jokingly spoken of Frankenstauweg or Frankenschleichweg because of traffic jams during rush hours.

From the earliest fall of 2012, this part should be expanded without crossing the highway and to the urban area in parts in a tunnel traverse ( CHF tube). The underlying the Underground Station Rothenburgerstraße has already been built deep enough in the 1980s to about even accommodate a road tunnel can.

In this area there are some powerful connection points with one crossing the feeder.

During the Frankenschnellweg the AS Nürnberg- port crosses a circle N4 road in a straight line and continues to AS Nürnberg- Eibach, the re-start of A is 73 here in the southwest on the AS Nürnberg- Hafen Ost Südwesttangente. It crosses the motorway junction Nürnberg-Süd A 6, a few kilometers further south at the junction Nürnberg / Feucht in the A 9 to open and to end there. In the area of the motorway interchange, the highway crosses the railway high-speed line Nuremberg -Ingolstadt- Munich.

Animal Crossing Protection

The A 73 is secured along the entire route between Suhl and Lichtenfels by both sides through fences against deer crossing. In newly released sections, it happened that the deer crossing fences were not yet available, but were mounted later.

The safe Wildwechsel make numerous field and forest road underpasses and viaducts of the A 73 between Schleusingen and ice rink, there are, among others, a special animal passage.

Others

Shortly before the release of the section between ice rink, ice rink and North -South end of 2003, it was found that the clear height of the overpass ice rink -South did not have the required 4.7 meters, but the edge was 4.45 meters. Therefore, the final carriageway south had to be set correspondingly lower on a length of 300 meters.

The conversion of buildings in the new section between ice rink -South and Lichtenfels were all executed seamlessly. These include the 127 -meter-long prestressed concrete girder bridge for the transfer of municipal road sub volume up Doerfles and 101.8 meters wide spanning steel truss bridge on the county road LIF 2

To the east of Bamberg between Memmelsdorf (22) and Bamberg - East ( 23) there is a connection point that is used only for military purposes. It is a direct connection to the U.S. military area of the Warner Barracks.

Between junctions Nuremberg / Fürth (39) and Nürnberg- port is dedicated to the route not as a federal highway, but as a county road N4 of the city of Nuremberg. She wears there also officially named Frankenschnellweg and continues through the Nürnberg- port and the Nürnberg- Eibach towards Reichelsdorf continued ( former Planning Federal Highway 77/751 ). The section between the junction Nürnberg / Fürth and the junction with the Rothenburgerstraße is nevertheless as a motorway - blue - signposted. In the section between junctions Cross Nürnberg-Hafen Nürnberg- Hafen Ost and the route is part of the Südwesttangente and dedicated as public road. For the devoted as county and township roads sections no truck toll must be paid.

In the section of Erlangen - Nuremberg motorway in the planning time was also known as Federal Highway 4a and Federal highway 753.
