Burhaniye

Burhaniye is a Turkish district town in the province of Balıkesir on the Aegean coast in the innermost corner of the Gulf of Edremit opposite the Greek island of Lesbos.

Geography

Located and watered by the river Havran Between the mountain ranges of Mount Ida in the north and in the south of the Madra the flat coastal plain is very fertile. It is known for its Burhaniye olive cultivation. The area is prone to earthquakes.

History

The famous ruins of the ancient cities of Pergamon and Troy in the south to the northwest are within a day trip of about 80 and 150 km. The city that gave its name to the Gulf, Edremit, is the biblical Adramyttion which also finds mention in the book of Acts ( 27.2 ). Burhaniye Kemer was initially named after the Turkish word for aqueduct, which originally led approach water from Madra Mountains. Later it was named after the son of Sultan Abdulhamid II osmanischens Şehzade Burhaneddin Efendi. In the museums of archeology and for the Turkish national movement, the old and the recent history of the region is displayed.

Economy

Apart from agriculture and enhancing its products processing industry - there are 18 olive oil mills in the district - the place is dominated by tourism, especially here in the past on the sea, the district Oren. The wide sandy beach has received the seal of approval of the Blue Flag by the Foundation for Environmental Education.

Twin Cities

Since 2011, the aspiring city is connected with the German town of Hürth.
