Burt Bales

Burt Bales ( born April 20, 1917 in Stevensville (Montana), † October 26, 1989 in San Francisco ) was an American jazz stride pianist.

Burt Bales began as a twelve year old to play the piano and kicked off 1938 in hotels and night clubs in California. In the 1940s, he worked in San Francisco and has performed with Lu Watters ' Yerba Buena Jazz Band and was recruited by the U.S. armed forces. Still photographs emerged in 1943 in a session with Bunk Johnson. He was then dismissed for myopia from the army and led from 1943 to 1946 own formations before he was house musician of the 1018 's Club in San Francisco. He then played with Turk Murphy ( 1949-50 ), Bob Scobey and Marty Marsala, 1954-1966 mostly as a soloist; he had regular appearances at Pier 23 During this period numerous recordings for the label Good Time Jazz, Arhoolie, ABC - Paramount and Euphonic.
