History

Before the conquest, the area around Cachoeira was inhabited by indigenous peoples. Cachoeira received city rights in 1698 and was called Vila de Nossa Senhora do Rosário do Porto da Cachoeira do Paraguaçu, since the location is near waterfalls of the river Paraguaçu.

The cultivation of sugar cane and the production of gold in the nearby Rio das Contas and the expansion of the river port of Cachoeira led to an intensification of trade in the 18th century. Cachoeira also played a significant role in the fighting for the independence of Brazil from 1821.
