Cairngorm Mountain Railway

The Cairngorm Mountain Railway is a 2 km long funicular railway on Cairn Gorm in Scotland and highest railroad in the United Kingdom. It is situated in the Cairngorms National Park, the largest national park in Britain, near Aviemore, Highland.

Since 1961 a chair was on the slopes of Cairn Gorm, who had, however, proved to be very susceptible to wind. The construction of the Cairngorm Mountain Railway by the Doppelmayr company started in 1999, the opening took place on 23 December 2001. The railway is operated by the Cairngorm Mountain Limited and is owned by Highlands and Islands Enterprise. At 1,970 m length mastered the path which is executed in 2,000 mm broad gauge, a height difference of 462 m. Above the middle station Sheiling is a passing place. The route is mostly designed as a concrete viaduct, the last 350 m are located in a tunnel. The cable car in the winter is part of the area and is used for summer hikers and tourists.
