Cala d'Or

Template: Infobox district of a municipality in Spain / Maintenance / localidad Cala d' Or ( "Golden Bay " ) is a holiday resort on the Spanish Balearic island of Mallorca. It is located on the southeast coast in the region ( comarca ) Migjorn.

General

Cala d'Or is for the most part to the municipality of Santanyi, the northeastern part of the Cala Serena to the municipality of Felanitx. The main centers of the resort are Cala d'Or with adjacent areas of Cala Egos and Cala Ferrera. The distance to the center of Palma is 60 kilometers to the airport at Palma you drive about an hour. In 2011, Cala d'Or had 4,224 inhabitants.

The rugged coastal cliffs is broken by many small sandy coves such as Cala Serena, Cala Ferrera, Cala Esmeralda, the largest beach of the place: the Cala Gran, also the eponymous Cala d'Or, Cala d'es Forti, Cala Galera and Cala Egos. A mini train takes the tourists on a regular basis to the various beaches. The center is very busy in the summer months, but not as crowded as other tourist centers in Mallorca. In pedestrian areas, a large number of shops, bars and restaurants, offering partly international cuisine together. The Marina Porto Cari in Cala Llonga offers exclusive yachts and charter boats alike moorings and protection from storms as well as a large number of restaurants and bars.

The entrance to the port by ship was formerly protected by the fortress Es Forti - today the only historic landmark of Cala d'Or. The main entrance for vehicles made in the roundabout on traffic islands, which are decorated with sculptures.

Many buildings in Cala d'Or, according to the Mediterranean tradition painted white and correspond in their flat design, the cubic Ibiza style. This is not accidental, for the Ibizan architect Josep Costa Ferrer, who planned the town in the early 1930s, had been inspired by his home.

The nearest major town is inland Santanyi. The original fishing port of Porto Petro is five minutes by car. Set in a conservation area lying not far distant double bay of Cala Mondragó recommended for an extended day at the beach.
