Calceolariaceae

Garden Slipper (Calceolaria integrifolia )

The slipper flower plants ( Calceolariaceae ) are a family of plants in the order of Lippenblütlerartigen ( Lamiales ). The only two genera and about 275 species have up to one or two types of a purely Neotropical distribution.

Description

The types of Calceolariaceae family are usually herbaceous plants, rarely shrubs. The against-constant leaves are simple and have toothed or rarely smooth leaf margins.

The flowers are cruciform. They usually have two stamens. Nectar they do not offer. The ovary is half inferior. The petals are fused to the typical " slipper ", this is two-lipped corolla tube. The opening is referred to as mouth. When the mouth is strongly closed, the flowers are pollinated by bumblebees, the mouth is wide open, bees are the pollinators. They are being rewarded pollinators with oil from oil glands and pollen. Are formed capsule fruits.

Dissemination

You have an almost pure neotropical distribution. Their areas are in Central America, in the lowlands of western South America and the mountains of South America. Only one or two Jovellana species originate from the North Island of New Zealand.

System

The taxa were previously incorporated into the family of Scrophulariaceae. After Gene sequences they are since 2001 in Richard G. Olmstead, Claude W. de Pamphili, Andrea D. Wolfe, Nelson D. Young, Wayne J. Elisons & Patrick A. Reeves: Disintegration of the Scrophulariaceae, In: American Journal of Botany, Volume 88, pp. 348-361: Calceolariaceae on page 357 own family. The basionym is the tribe Calceolarieae D.Don with the type genus calceolaria L..

To the family of slipper flower plants ( Calceolariaceae ) include only two genera and about 260 species:

  • Calceolaria ( calceolaria L. ): The 240-275 Neotropical species occur only in Central America prior to the southernmost South America.
  • Jovellana Ruiz & Pav: It comes with six or seven species in Chile and the North Island of New Zealand ( only one or two species), they grow in temperate climates: Jovellana guentheri Kraenzl.
  • Jovellana punctata Ruiz & Pav: It thrives Chile, at high altitude, for example, between 1985 and 3920 meters.
  • Jovellana repens Kraenzl. It is one of two species of the family outside the Neotropics in the North Island of New Zealand, a subshrub.
  • Jovellana scapiflora Ruiz & Pav
  • Jovellana sinclairii ( Hook. ) Kraenzl. It is one of two species of the family outside the Neotropics in the North Island of New Zealand, it is a small shrub.
  • Jovellana tenella
  • Jovellana triandra Cav.
  • Jovellana violacea ( Cav. ) G.Don: It is a small shrub with how the botanical name suggests, purple flowers, native to Chile ( Valdivian forest in southern Chile).

The types of previous genera Fagelia Schwencke, Porodittia G.Don ex Kraenzl. , Stemotria Wettst. & Harms ex Engl and Trianthera Wettst. have been included in the genus Calcealaria.

Use

From a few species of the genus calceolaria varieties have been bred to be used as ornamental plants in parks, gardens, balconies and rooms as ornamental plants.

A houseplant for cool rooms is the bedroom slipper (Calceolaria Herbeohybrida ).
