Călin Popescu-Tăriceanu

Calin Popescu - Tăriceanu [ kəlin popesku təritʃe̯a nu ː ] ( born January 14, 1952 in Bucharest ) is a Romanian politician. It was December 28, 2004 to December 22, 2008 Prime Minister and thus head of government of Romania ( see Cabinet Tăriceanu II). He belongs to the liberal National Liberal Party ( PNL) and was its president from 2004 to 2009.

1976 graduated Popescu- Tăriceanu training as hydrotechnical engineering, 1981, he earned a master's degree in mathematics and computer science. Since 1990 he has been politically active as a liberal. Mid -1990s he was a member of the Liberal Partidul 1993 ( with Dinu Patriciu etc. ), then the PNL. From 1996 to 1997 he was employed as Commerce and Industry Minister in the Cabinet of the PNŢ CD - politician Victor Ciorbea.

Late 2004 Popescu- Tăriceanu a coalition of his party, the Democratic Union of Hungarians in Romania and the Democratic Party (PD). Just a few months later he fell out with President Traian Basescu. This dispute led in April 2007 to the departure of the PD from the government. Popescu- Tăriceanu thereupon formed a minority government of PNL and Hungary Union, which was temporarily tolerated by the previously opposition Social Democratic Party. On 19 May 2007 he succeeded not in a referendum, Băsescu to relieve of his duties. In return, the PD failed on 11 June 2007 and with the attempt Popescu- Tăriceanu to overthrow the Social Democratic Party on October 3, 2007 introduced into parliament confidence motions. In the parliamentary elections on November 30, 2008 Popescu- Tăriceanu and his National Liberal Party suffered a defeat; Popescu- Tăriceanu it failed to become prime minister again.

On March 20, 2009 were Popescu- Tăriceanu at a party congress in a crucial vote for the party presidency against Crin Antonescu.

Calin Popescu - Tăriceanu is Vice President of the European Liberals ELDR and LI (Liberal International ).

He is Roman Catholic.
