Calvin Willard Gilfillan

Calvin Willard Gilfillan (* February 20, 1832 in East Brook, Mercer County, Pennsylvania, † December 2, 1901 in Franklin, Pennsylvania ) was an American politician. Between 1869 and 1871 he represented the State of Pennsylvania in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

The Calvin was born in what is now Lawrence County Gilfillan attended the public schools of his home and then the Westminster College in New Wilmington. After that he was in Mercer County School Board for two terms. In 1859 he was also an administrative employee at the House of Representatives from Pennsylvania. After studying law and his 1859 was admitted to the bar he began to work in Mercer in this profession. Between 1861 and 1865 he served as district attorney in Mercer County. Politically, he was a member of the Republican Party.

In the congressional elections of 1868 Gilfillan was in the 20th electoral district of Pennsylvania in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of Solomon Newton Pettis on March 4, 1869. Since he has not been confirmed in 1870, he was able to complete only one term in Congress until March 3, 1871. During this time the 15th Amendment was ratified.

After the end of his time in the U.S. House of Representatives Calvin Gilfillan still practiced as a lawyer until 1873; after, he was active in the banking industry. In June 1872 he was a delegate to the Republican National Convention in Philadelphia in part, was nominated to the President Ulysses S. Grant for re-election. He died on 2 December 1901 in Franklin, where he was also buried.
