The program is distributed as free software in source code under the terms of the GNU General Public License (GPL ) and is administered on the side of SourceForge.

History

Originally CamStudio was published by the American developers RenderSoft. RenderSoft was bought by eHelp and the project went on in the software RoboDemo. In the published version 2.1 of eHelp the functionality of CamStudio was limited and a registration was necessary to restrict the free competition to the commercial products.

After the acquisition of eHelp by Macromedia ( the developer of the flash studios ) RoboDemo was renamed in Captivate. Captivate was only distributed under a proprietary license and belongs to the purchase of Macromedia, now Adobe Systems.

Starting from the last unrestricted open-source version 2.0, the development of CamStudio was continued in September 2007 and released again as a free software with the release of the beta version of CamStudio 2.5 Beta 1. It was renamed in accordance with CamStudio Open Source.
