Macromedia

Macromedia [ ˌ mækɹoʊmi diə ː ] was a software company based in San Francisco, which was known primarily for its products Flash, Freehand and Dreamweaver. On 3 December 2005 Macromedia was acquired by Adobe Systems.

History

Macromedia was founded in 1992 by the merger of Macro Mind and Authorware.

1995 takes over Macromedia, the company Altsys, the manufacturer of the graphics program FreeHand, the Altsys had temporarily licensed to Aldus.

1996 takes over Macromedia, the company FutureWave from San Diego, which had in 1995 introduced the vector-based illustration program Smartsketch and a format called Splash (. Spl ) to represent these graphics in the browser. The player itself is called Future Splash. On the basis of Smartsketch the animation program Future Splash Animator is developed, the forerunner of Flash.

In May 2002, the software company Adobe Systems is suing a 2.8 million U.S. dollars from Macromedia. Macromedia had a UI concept used, the Adobe Systems claimed since 1995, through a controversial software patent for themselves. Shortly thereafter, Macromedia retaliated with several lawsuits that were also based on software patents, and won. The price payable by Adobe Systems damages amounted to nearly 5 million U.S. dollars. In July 2002, however, the two companies made ​​their patent dispute in out of court. On the conditions that led to the agreement, but nothing was known.

On 18 April 2005, the boards of directors of Adobe Systems and Macromedia have decided that Adobe Macromedia will take over for 3.4 billion U.S. dollars. The acquisition was completed on 3 December 2005.

Adobe released version 8 of Products " Flash" and " Dreamweaver" still under the brand Macromedia, then a large part of software portfolios in the third edition of the Adobe Creative Suite has been integrated.
