Canal de Huningue

The Huningue Canal ( German: Hüningen channel) is a 1828 finished shipping canal in the Alsace region of France.

History

He was originally a branch canal (French: Embranchement ) of the Canal du Rhone au Rhin, branched off in Mulhouse, led by Hüningen to the Rhine and served alongside the waterways and the water supply of the channel.

After establishment of the Rhine side channel (French: Grand Canal d' Alsace) the northern section of the Canal du Rhone au Rhin between Mulhouse and Strasbourg was closed. Since then, the entire ship traffic over the former branch canal is performed until after Niffer, where it flows into the Rhine side channel. This section (also known under the name Kembs - Niffer branch channel) has been developed for the large ships ( Grand Gabarit ) and is attributed to the Canal du Rhone au Rhin today.

On the rump Huningue Canal, which is 15 kilometers long and runs parallel to the Rhine side channel between Niffer and Hüningen 1962 all four locks were shut down. From Niffer you can still reach the marina Kembs with pleasure boats on the lock-free section of the channel. The remaining channel is only partially be explored by canoe and rowboat. There are still some bascule bridges over the canal.

Environment

The canal passes through the floodplain of the old Rhine, where in 1982 the nature reserve ( Réserve naturelle) Petite Camargue Alsacienne was established, which is visited by many tourists.

Wild water park Hüningen

In the city itself Hüningen the fallow since 1962 port of the channel to the artificial whitewater area Parc des Eaux Vives was expanded from 1992 to 1993. Here, the channel bed was considerably altered, moved approximately 50,000 m³ of material and installed artificial, partly variable obstacles in the river. The average difficulty level is at level II, in places (eg input shaft) in stage III. In parallel with the 350 m long white water channel runs a channel back to the weir where the canoeists can paddle back and have a short Umtragestrecke.

Operator of the whitewater park is the city Hüningen.
