The Canberra class is a class of two helicopter Docklandungsschiffen, Landing Helicopter Dock English name ( LHD), particularly for amphibious operations, which are procured from Australia for the Royal Australian Navy.

History

The Australian government approved the three- billion -AU $ project to build the two LHDs that are to be used for air support, amphibious assaults, transportation and management tasks. They should replace HMAS Tobruk and one of the two ships of the Kanimbla class.

Between 2005 and 2007, two different offers were examined. In addition to the later victorious offering that, based on the Spanish Buque de Proyección Estratégica ( BPE), the present Juan Carlos I ( L -61), there was a proposal based on the smaller French Bâtiments de Projection et de Commandement (BPC ) or. ( Mistral class).

In June 2007, received the former Tenix Defence, which was acquired by BAE Systems in early 2008, the development and construction contract for the construction of two ships. The local value should be 25 %, which is why the equipment to be built in Spain hulls will be held in Australia. In addition to the Spanish Navantia, where the shell takes place, are L- 3 Communications, Saab and Siemens, which supplies the pod drives (drive nacelles ), other important sub-contractors. After the shell ships the completion of El Ferrol be transported by the MV Blue Marlin to Australia, initially the future Canberra, who arrived in Melbourne after three months of transfer in October 2012. There the island and systems are installed.

Technology

The ships are based as described above on the design of the Spanish BPE. So far there have been no major ships in the RAN.

The sea-based air forces of the Australian Defence Force obtained by the Canberra - class significantly better skills. The air component is up to 24 and Navy Army helicopters. These include Army and Navy MRH -90 transport, Tiger Army combat and Navy S -70B Seahawk anti-submarine defense helicopters. Although the ships have a ski jump ( "ski - jump" ) and operate STOVL aircraft such as the F -35B, are certifiable, they lack, at least initially, a required for flight operations by airplane radar. It is also still no procurement of appropriate aircraft such as the F -35B planned.
