Candlemas Island

Candlemas Iceland is a small uninhabited island located in the southern Atlantic Ocean British overseas territory of South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands.

Located in the South Sandwich Islands island forms with just 4.5 kilometers south-west to the neighboring island of Vindication, the group of Candlemasinseln. Candlemas Iceland has a length of about 5.9 km and a width of 3.7 km.

The eponymous main island Candlemas Iceland was discovered in 1775 by the British navigator James Cook. He was then believed to be the front, which still showed up to the end of the 50s of the 20th century: in the north of the island a tirelessly active stratovolcano with fire and Lavaaktivitäten. The name forgave Cook after the date of the initial review, February 2, 1775, the Lichtmeßtag, Eng. Candlemas.
