Cape Runaway

Cape Runaway is the easternmost point of the Bay of Plenty and the belonging to it smaller Kopongatahi Bay on the North Island of New Zealand. The cape is situated 90 kilometers north-east of Whakatane and 50 kilometers west of East Cape. Administratively, it is part of the Opotiki District.

The name Cape Runaway, it was by James Cook during his first voyage to the Endeavour in 1769, after Māori to Cook's ship had approached in canoes in potentially hostile intent and fled to a cannon shot.

Before the Cape are four small islands, the largest of which is Otarawhata Iceland. The nearest town is about four kilometers south Whangaparaoa.
