Cape Verdean presidential election, 2011

The presidential elections in Cape Verde in 2011 were held in August 2011 in the West African island nation of Cape Verde, six months after the parliamentary elections. As in the first round on August 7, none of the candidates received a majority of votes, a runoff between the two highest ranked Jorge Carlos Fonseca from the Movimento para a Democracia (MPD ) was ( German: Movement for Democracy ) on August 21, and Manuel Inocêncio Sousa from the Partido Africano da Independencia de Cabo Verde ( PAICV ) ( German: African Party for the independence of Cape Verde) carried out, both of whom will each receive 30 percent of the votes in the first round. Thus, the presidential candidates of the two parties were in the runoff, which dominate the politics of Cape Verde since the introduction of multiparty system in 1991. The winner Jorge Carlos Fonseca emerged from the election with 54 percent of the vote. The loser of the runoff, Souza, recognized his defeat and congratulated the victorious Fonseca. The adherence to democratic standards in the election was disputed by either side. Cape Verde was thus again one of the few undoubtedly functioning democracies in Africa.

The four candidates are as follows:

  • Manuel Sousa Inocêncio candidate of the ruling ( PAICV ) and former foreign minister.
  • Jorge Carlos Fonseca candidate of the opposition MPD and also a former foreign minister.
  • Aristides Lima, a member of the PAICV as Fonseca, but without the support of his party, President of the National Assembly of Cape Verde
  • Joaquim Monteiro, an independent candidate.
