Caproni - Vizzola F.4

The team F.Fabrizi began in 1937 with the work to a single-seat fighter in composite construction, the F.4. The F stood here for Fabrizi.

The wooden, zweiholmigen wings were with plywood, which could also absorb forces from the wing loading, planked. The fuselage consisted of a tubular steel frame with riveted Duralblechen. There have been proposed two versions, the F.4 with a liquid-cooled 12 -cylinder engine Isotta Fraschini Asso 121 - RC40 with 960 hp 4000 m, and the F.5 with a 14- cylinder engine Fiat A.74 RC38. According to the Ministry of Aviation of the Asso - engine was not suitable for fighter planes, thus the F.5 was given preference.

In the summer of 1939, the Daimler- Benz DB 601A was available in Italy. A cell of the F.5 pilot series 601 was rebuilt for the DB to the prototype of the F.4. In July 1940, the first flight took place. The armament consisted of two 12.7 -mm machine gun SAFAT. The prototype was tested in 1942 at the 303rd Squadriglia in use.

Caproni - Vizzola F.5

The developed parallel to F.4 with the 870 -horsepower 14 -cylinder engine Fiat A.74 RC38 F.5 first flew on 19 February 1939. The high maneuverability convinced, and there were a further prototype and a preliminary series of twelve machines ordered. The last of these machines was converted into a prototype of the F.4.

The machines were armed with two 12.7 -mm machine gun and SAFAT used in the 300th Squadriglia. In 1942, she served in the 167th Gruppo as a night fighter.

Caproni - Vizzola F.5 up

This prototype (MM 5932 ) should have the built in Alfa Romeo under license DB 601. Meanwhile, since the more powerful Daimler- Benz DB 605 was provided for the F.6M, this proposal was invalid.

Caproni - Vizzola F.6M

The F.6M (M = Metallico ) consisted of a converted F.5 cell with a DB 605A and newly constructed metal construction wings. The prototype flew in September 1941 The armament consisted again of two 12.7 -mm machine gun SAFAT. ; In addition, the incorporation of two others MG was prepared in the wings. Initially, the machine had a big cooler under the engine. To reduce the air resistance of these was then moved back under the fuselage center.

The prototype was damaged in a collision on the airfield Bresso and stopped development.

Caproni - Vizzola F.6Z

For the planned 24-cylinder engine Isotta Fraschini RC25/60 Zeta - another version of the F.6 was provided F.6Z (Z = Zeta). The engine, which was only available in August 1943, made instead of the calculated 1500 HP but only 1200 hp. For this reason and because of the ceasefire, the development was not continued.

It is armed with three 12.7 -mm SAFAT -MG were provided in the fuselage and wings, the speed should be 630 km / h.
