Carl Charlier

Carl Vilhelm Ludwig Charlier ( born April 1, 1862 in Ostersund, † November 5, 1934 in Lund ) was a Swedish astronomer.

Life

Charlier received his doctorate of Sciences ( Ph.D.) from the University of Uppsala in 1887. He then remained there for some time, then moved to Stockholm University before he became in 1897 professor of astronomy and director of the Old Observatory of the University of Lund.

He was known for his statistical studies of the stars of our galaxy, their positions and their movements. From all he tried to develop a model of our galaxy.
