Lund Observatory

The Ancient Observatory Lund ( Lunds Swedish gamla Observatory ) is an astronomical observatory in the southern Swedish city of Lund. It was until 2001 part of the Department of Astronomy at the University of Lund.

The today listed building was created from Heligoland Zettervall and 1867 inaugurated after the department was moved from the central Kungshuset. 1897 Carl Charlier director of the observatory. It is within the medieval city walls in Observatorieparken, right next to the city park. The observatory is equipped with a 25 cm refractor, together with meridian circle. In the 1950s, was produced at the initiative of Knut Lundmark a panoramic picture of the night sky, the so-called " Vintergatskarta ". Between 1978 and 2001, one accessible to the general public planetarium was in the building.

The Astronomical faculty moved in 2001 into its new Institute at the Sölvegata, north of the city. The new observatory was integrated into Lunds old water tower.
