Carlos Oviedo Cavada

Life

Carlos Oviedo Cavada entered January 28, 1944 the Congregation of the Mercedarians in, put on 18 March 1945, the simple vows and on 19 March 1948, the perpetual profession from. He studied at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile. He received on September 4, 1949 in his hometown of ordination to the priesthood and then went to Rome at the Pontifical Gregorian University, where he continued his studies from 1949 to 1953 and a Ph.D. Dr. iur. can. From 1953 to 1958 taught at his alma mater Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile. From 1958 to 1961 he worked at the General Curia of his Order and operational studies in the Vatican Secret Archives.

Paul VI. appointed him on March 21, 1964 Titular Bishop of Beneventum and auxiliary bishop in Concepción. The retired Archbishop of Concepción, Alfredo Silva Santiago ordained him on June 7 of the same year the bishop; Co-consecrators were Manuel Sánchez Beguiristáin, Archbishop of Concepción, and Emilio Tagle Covarrubias, Archbishop of Valparaíso. He took from 1964 until the end in 1965 at the Second Vatican Council in part. He was appointed Archbishop of Antofagasta and on May 4, 1974 the Apostolic Administrator of Calama on 25 March 1974. John Paul II appointed him on 30 March 1990 as Archbishop of Santiago de Chile.

On November 26, 1994 it took John Paul II as Cardinal Priest pro hac vice with the titular church of Santa Maria della Scala in the College of Cardinals to. He joined on 16 February 1998 as Archbishop of Santiago de Chile back for health reasons. Bishop Sergio Valech Aldunate took over as Apostolic Administrator of the Archdiocese of the line to Francisco Javier Errazuriz Ossa on May 17, 1998 took office. Oviedo Cavada died in December 1998 and is buried in the Cathedral of Santiago.
