Carlton Brandaga Curtis

Carlton Brandaga Curtis (* December 17, 1811 in Madison County, New York, † March 17, 1883 in Erie, Pennsylvania ) was an American politician. Between 1851 and 1855, and again from 1873 to 1875, he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Carlton Curtis enjoyed an academic education. After a subsequent law degree in 1834 and its recent approval as a lawyer, he started in Warren (Pennsylvania) to work in this profession. At the same time he proposed as a member of the Democratic Party launched a political career. Between 1836 and 1838 he sat as an MP in the House of Representatives from Pennsylvania.

In the congressional elections of 1850 Curtis was the 23rd electoral district of Pennsylvania in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of James Thompson on March 4, 1851. After a re-election in the 16th district of his state, he was able to complete up to March 3, 1855 two terms in Congress, who were shaped by the events leading up to the Civil War. Since 1853 he was chairman of the Committee on Accounts.

In 1855, he joined the Republican Party, founded in the previous year. In the years 1862 and 1863, he served during the civil war in the army of the Union. He brought it up to colonel. In July 1863, he had to quit for health reasons, military service. Then he returned to Warren, where he practiced as a lawyer again. In 1868 he moved his residence and his law firm to Erie. He also went into the banking and oil business. He was also one of the founders of Dunkirk & Venango Railroad Co.

In the congressional elections of 1872 Carlton Curtis was elected as a Republican in the 19th District of Pennsylvania again to Congress, where he Glenni 1873 William Scofield replaced on March 4. Since he has not been confirmed in 1874, he could spend just one more term in Congress until March 3, 1875. After the final end of his time in the U.S. House of Representatives Curtis worked as a lawyer again. He died on March 17, 1883 in Erie, and was buried in Warren.
