Levi Maish

Levi Maish ( born November 22, 1837 in Conewago, York County, Pennsylvania, † February 26, 1899 in Washington DC ) was an American politician. Between 1875 and 1879, and again from 1887 to 1891, he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Levi Maish attended the public schools of his home and then the York County Academy. He then worked as a teacher. During the Civil War he served until 1863 in the army of the Union, where he rose to colonel. After studying law at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia and his 1864 was admitted as a lawyer, he began to work in this profession. At the same time he proposed as a member of the Democratic Party launched a political career. During 1867 and 1868 he sat as a Member of the House of Representatives from Pennsylvania. In 1872 he was commissioned by the state Legislature with reviewing some employees in York County.

In the congressional elections of 1874 Maish was elected in the 19th electoral district of Pennsylvania in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington, where he became the successor of the Republican Carlton Brandaga Curtis on March 4, 1875. After a re-election he was able to complete in Congress until March 3, 1879 two legislative sessions. In 1878 he was not re-elected. In the elections of 1886 Maish was re-elected in the 19th district of his state in Congress, where he replaced John Augustus Swope on March 4, 1887. Until March 3, 1891, he was able to spend two more legislatures. In 1890, he was not confirmed in its mandate.

After the end of his time in the U.S. House of Representatives Levi Maish practiced law in Washington. There he died on 26 February 1899. He was buried at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia.
