John Augustus Swope

John Augustus Swope ( born December 25, 1827 in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, † December 6, 1910 in Washington DC ) was an American politician. Between 1884 and 1887 he represented the State of Pennsylvania in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

John Swope attended the common schools and the Mount St. Mary's Academy in Emmitsburg (Maryland). Then he studied until 1847 at the Princeton College. After a subsequent study medicine at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia and his medical license, he began practicing in this profession for several years; then he worked in Baltimore in the trade. Later he returned to Gettysburg, where he was president of the Gettysburg National Bank was established in 1879. He was also active in the crafts and in agriculture. Politically, he was a member of the Democratic Party.

After the death of Mr William Addison Duncan Swope was chosen as his successor in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington at the due election for the 19 seats of Pennsylvania, where he took up his new mandate on 23 December 1884. After a re-election, he could remain until March 3, 1887 in Congress. However, the by-election for the period beginning on March 4, 1885 legislative session, for which the deceased Duncan had already been selected at the time of his death, and later was made. It was only on November 5, 1885 could Swope, according to electoral success, take his seat again. Thus, the mandate between 4 March and November 5, 1885 was vacant.

In 1886, Swope gave up another candidacy. After the end of his time in the U.S. House of Representatives, he remained in Washington, where he worked in the banking industry. He is also passed on December 6, 1910.
