The Carnedd Llewelyn, also written Carnedd Llywelyn, is a mountain in the Carneddau mountain range in Snowdonia National Park in Wales. With 1064 meters it is the highest summit of the Carneddau and the second highest mountain in Wales (after the 1085 m high Snowdon ).

About the Name

The Welsh pronunciation of the name (in both spellings ) is [' kæɾnɛð ɬə'wɛlɪn ], the German translation is " Llewelyns stone grave " (English: " Llewelyn 's Cairn "; see also Steinmann and Cairn ).

The name probably goes back to one of the two Welsh prince called Llywelyn from the 13th century. However, it is not clear whether. Upon Llywelyn the Great Llywelyn ap Gruffudd and his grandson

Location and climbing opportunities

The Carnedd Llewelyn is on the border of the administrative regions of Gwynedd and Conwy, between the peaks Carnedd Dafydd ( in the southwest ) and Foel Grach ( in the north), in the center of the main train of the Carneddau in northeast-southwest direction; in the north- east it is connected through a side comb with Yr Elen. It can not be achieved without a long walk through this situation. It can be climbed by Gerlan, above Bethesda, from, by taking the path on the Afon Llafar along, then up towards the summit of Yr Elen and from there via the short link comb for Carnedd Llewelyn. A second trail leads from Helyg on the A5 past the lake on the slopes above of Craig yr Ysfa to the summit. Or, follow the main ridge, either from Pen yr Ole Wen or from the Foel - fras.

The summit of Carnedd Llewelyn - as with many mountains of the Carneddau - from a boulder -strewn plateau, but the steep walls along the ridges offer popular climbing routes, particularly Ysgolion Duon ( " the black heads " ) and Craig yr Ysfa.
