Carrowmore Lake

Carrowmore Lake ( Irish Loch na Ceathrún moiré ) is a lake in County Mayo, Connacht Province in the Republic of Ireland. The lake is located between the towns of Bangor Erris and Barnatra at the south end of Broadhaven Bay of the Irish Sea.

General

Carrowmore Lake is a freshwater lake, has a maximum diameter of 5 km and is surrounded by mountains. The lake is not very deep, but provides for the entire region Erris on the Mullet Peninsula in drinking water. The shores are surrounded by a bog - belt, but there are a significant number of residential properties along the marshes. The water catchment area of the lake extends into the region of Kilcommon where the important Corrib gas refinery is located, which promotes and processes the natural gas deposits off the coast.

Archeology

Some of the islands in the lake are crannogs ( artificial islands ) that served as fortifications from the Iron Age to the 17th century. The Mountain Fort Morgan Rath ( Iorras Domhnann ) on a mountain on the southwestern shore of Lake Carrowmore is the Táin Bó Flidhais in the saga ( " The expelling of Flidhais ' cattle ' ) be called Castle Dun Flidhais.

Carrowmore Lake should not be confused with the also archaeologically important area Carrowmore, County Sligo.
