Carson Smith

Carson Raymond Smith ( born January 1, 1931 in San Francisco, † November 2, 1997 in Las Vegas ) was an American jazz bassist.

Life and work

Carson Smith began his career in the West Coast jazz scene, played in the band by Gerry Mulligan ( 1952-53 ), Chet Baker ( 1953-55 ), Russ Freeman ( 1955-56 ) and Chico Hamilton ( 1955-57 ). Carson Smith also participated in recordings of Clifford Brown ( 1954), Dick Twardzik (1954) and Billie Holiday with which he accompanied in 1956 with Chico Hamilton's band at Carnegie Hall. In the late 1950s he played with Bud Shank / Bill Perkins. In 1959 he went with Stan Kenton's orchestra on tour, then in 1960 worked with Charlie Barnet. In 1962, he moved to Los Angeles, where he played with Charlie Teagarden (1962) and Lionel Hampton ( 1963). In 1964 he went with Georgie Auld on tour in Japan. In the 1960s he also worked with Buddy Rich, Arno Marsh and Carl Fontana. Finally, he was house musician at the 4 Queens Hotel in Las Vegas where he accompanied by traveling musicians like Art Farmer, Lew Tabackin, Zoot Sims and Chet Baker. In 1989 he was involved in a reunion album with Chico Hamilton, the note appeared in Soul.
