Arno Marsh

Arno Marsh ( born May 28, 1928 in Grand Rapids, Michigan) is an American jazz tenor saxophonist.

Life and work

Arno Marsh grew up in Grand Rapids; his father was a professional guitarist and copyist, who organized at home jam sessions; his mother was a pianist and flutist. In high school he played in marching and concert bands. Early models were as saxophonist Chu Berry, Ben Webster, Coleman Hawkins and Sonny Rollins. He began his career in 1946 in local bands that toured in neighboring Midwestern states, including 1947/48 in which was founded by Sonny Burke band The Duke Ambassadors.

Nationally known he was from 1951 through its membership in the bands of Urbie Green, and from December 1951 in Woody Herman's Third Herd. As a soloist, he can be heard in recordings Hermans as These Foolish Things ( Remind Me of You ). 1952/53, he worked with his own bands back in his hometown; In 1955 he played again at Hermans Third Herd, 1956 in Chicago briefly with Stan Kenton and Maynard Ferguson in Los Angeles in before he moved to Las Vegas, where he worked in hotel bands, first in the backing band of country humorist Hank Penny. In 1960, he played with Charlie Ventura in the Thunderbird Lounge; In 1968 he accompanied Nancy Wilson when shooting in Las Vegas.

With Carl Fontana he made the late 1990s a common quintet that grossed several live albums. Under his own name he presented, in 2004 before the album Sunday Afternoons at the Lighthouse Cafe.
