Castelvecchio Bridge

The Ponte Scaligero ( German: Scaliger ) is a Medieval bridge over the Adige River in Verona. The bridge was built in 1354-1356 by Cangrande II della Scala, to give him in case of a rebellion of the population due to its tyrannical rule a safe escape route from the connected eponymous castle. It is named after the family of the Scaliger, the rulers of Verona at that time. The design was so robust that it in spite of a severe flood stayed for five centuries undamaged until French troops in 1802 after the peace of Luneville destroyed the tower on the left side of the river and most of the battlements remote or zumauerten. 1824 damaged main pillar was restored ten years later rebuilt the walls and the bridge crossing reopened.

The bridge was just like the Ponte Pietra largely destroyed during the retreat of the German troops on April 24, 1945. A faithful restoration began in 1949 and was completed in 1951, with the exception of the left tower.

It rests on three segmental arches of 24 m, 27 m and 48.7 m span; the latter was at the time of its completion the largest arch bridge in the world. Overall, the bridge is 133 m long and 7.55 m wide.
