Castroville, surnamed The Little Alsace of Texas, is a city in Medina County in the U.S. state of Texas in the United States.

Geography

The city is located in south-central Texas, on the eastern border of the Medina County, and has a total area of 6.6 km ², of which 0.4 km ² water surface are.

History

Castroville was founded in 1844 by Henri Castro, one of the most important men of the Republic of Texas at the time. Castro brought dozens of European families from Alsace and Baden to Texas, who settled his land to the Medina River, about 30 kilometers west of San Antonio. The city was, until its replacement by Hondo, also the county seat ( county seat ).

According to the census of 2000, there were 2,664 people in 941 households and 719 families. The population density was 403.4 inhabitants per km ². The racial the population was composed of 81.53 % White, 0.11 % African American, 0.30 % Native American, 0.79 % Asian, 0.08 % Pacific Islander residents from the and 13.78 % from other ethnic groups. The average household size was 2.74 and the average family size amounted to 3.17.

28.0% of the population were under 18 years old, 6.9 % from 18 to 24, 27.7 % 25-44, 21.7% from 45 to 64, and 15.6 % who were 65 years or older. The average age was 37 years. For every 100 females of all ages were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, 88.3 males.

Males have a median income of $ 35 625 U.S. dollar against the women with 27 228 U.S. dollars.
