Catherine of Brandenburg-Küstrin

Catherine of Brandenburg- Kuestrin ( born August 10, 1549 Kuestrin, † September 30, 1602 in Coelln ) was a Princess of Brandenburg- Kuestrin and by marriage Electress of Brandenburg.

Life

Catherine was the younger of two daughters of Margrave John of Brandenburg- Kuestrin (1513-1571) from his marriage to Catherine (1518-1574), daughter of Duke Henry II of Brunswick- Wolfenbüttel.

She married on 8 January 1570 Kuestrin the later Elector Joachim Frederick of Brandenburg ( 1546-1608 ). The marriage delegitimized the claim of her husband to the Catholic Archdiocese of Magdeburg, which there could no longer prevail, and also Pope Pius V had demanded the dismissal of the Brandenburger because of his marriage to Emperor Maximilian.

Catherine was concerned about the care of poor and needy deserved, put in Wedding in Berlin on a dairy, let their products sell at the Berlin Molkenmarkt and founded by the income from the castle pharmacy where they gave free medicines to the needy.

Catherine (now in the Berlin Cathedral, No. 6 ) was buried on 13 October 1608 the Hohenzollern crypt.
