Features

Butterfly

The moths reach a wingspan of 61-63 millimeters. They are among the medium-sized species within the genus of Ribbons ( Catocala ). The forewings are gray in color and sometimes slightly brownish dusted. Both inner and outer cross- line stand out very clearly. Particularly striking is the very strong serrated profile of the outer transverse line. Stigma are indistinct or absent. The midfield is sometimes brightened slightly. From the wing base to the inner transverse line extends a black longitudinal line. The hind wings are colored pink and have a wide black Saumbinde and an evenly rounded, relatively broad black middle binding, which does not reach the inner edge. The fringes shimmering silky white.

Caterpillar

Adults caterpillars are characterized by a brownish color and a reddish dorsal line. Specific type are a yellowish transverse ridge on the eighth and another drab colored on the eleventh segment.

Similar Species

The similarity exists to Catocala Catocala lupina and detrita. These types are distinguished by the narrower means binding on the hind wings, which also shows a clear kink at the end. The also like Catocala pacta is easily distinguished by the red abdomen.

Geographical distribution and habitat

The species is in Spain, southern France, distributed locally in southern Central Europe, but lacking in Greece. It also occurs in North West Africa. They are found primarily on the banks of rivers and in wetlands and moist grasslands and valleys.

Way of life

Main flight period of moths are the months of July to September. At night they fly to artificial sources of light and bait. The caterpillars feed preferentially from the leaves of Goat Willow (Salix caprea ) or basket willow ( Salix viminalis ). They develop between June and July.
