Catshark

Greater spotted dogfish ( Scyliorhinus stellaris )

The dogfish ( Scyliorhinidae ) are a large family of ground sharks ( Carcharhiniformes ), it consists of seven genera with currently 63 species which occur in cool to warm seas worldwide. Only in the polar seas they are missing. They come well in all water depths from shallow waters to the deep sea before.

They owe their German name, big eyes that remind with their elongated pupils in the eyes of cats and a nictitating membrane have ( eyes with the lower (!) Eyelid closed). All types have in common that they lay eggs.

Features

Dogfish have a much elongated body and feature two spineless dorsal fins ( fins) and two anal fins. In contrast to all other Haifamilien, with the exception of Pentanchidae, a shark family that was recently split from the dogfish, the first dorsal fin is located on the height of the Pelvic fins or just behind it. Of the five gill slits located above the last of the pectoral fin base. A spray hole is present, as is a spiral intestine. Dogfish depending on the type 21 inches long and 1.70 meters. The only morphological feature which is different from the dogfish Pentanchidae, the supraorbital ridge cartilage crest above the eye that is missing the Pentanchidae.

A number of cat sharks have a distinct coloration. So the coral catshark is ( Atelomycterus marmoratus ) of a brownish color with darker areas and white spots. Others have dark longitudinal stripes as the Pyjamahai ( Poroderma africanum ), or a chain-like, dark pattern on the lighter skin as the Kettenkatzenhai ( Scyliorhinus retifer ).

Cat sharks feed on larger invertebrates and small fish.

System

Within the ground sharks ( Carcharhiniformes ) the cat sharks occupy a basal position as the sister group of all other families. With well over 100 species originally they were the most species-rich family of sharks. After separation of the Pentanchidae still 7 genera and about 60 species are counted to the dogfish:
