Cénevières

Cénevières is a southern French commune in the department Lot in the Midi-Pyrénées region. It comprises 172 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) and is part of the Regional Natural Park of Causses du Quercy.

Location

Cénevières lies at an altitude of about 160 meters above sea level. inst on the southwestern edge of the Massif Central in the territory of the Causse de Limogne. The nearest town is Cahors, about 37 km ( driving distance ) away to the west. The nearest large town about ten kilometers away is Limogne -en- Quercy.

Demographics

Until the mid-19th century the place had always 650-750 inhabitants. As a result of the phylloxera crisis in the wine and the mechanization of agriculture has declined, the population since the second half of the 19th century continuously reaching its low point in the last decades back.

Economy

In skin -Quercy agriculture was operated primarily for self-catering, which included the wine until the 19th century, but was abandoned almost entirely after the phylloxera crisis. Today - in addition to the livestock and poultry sectors - tourism in the form of apartment rentals ( gîtes ) a major role in the economy of the community.

History

The existence of a Gallo-Roman estate (villa rustica) is seen by some as an impetus for colonization of the rock. In the early Middle Ages, the rock was attached.

Attractions

  • Dating from the 13th, 14th, 15th and 16th century castle (château ) are located on a promontory overlooking the river Lot and yet almost hidden in the forest. The labyrinthine complex mediates - despite later additions and the many Renaissance - rectangular windows - a late medieval impression. Inside the 16th century were discovered during restoration work paintings. The construction has already been recognized in 1957 as a monument historique.
  • A large stone grave ( dolmen ) dating from the 4th millennium BC, the cover plate is still occupied with stones of the former Tumulus, located in a field about three kilometers south of the village. It was made in 1959 under protection.
  • In the surrounding area are still some field stone huts ( Caselles ) of dry masonry.
