History

The first mention of the place in the year 898 was in the late Middle Ages, the town belonged to the lords and barons later Sant Martí, which was responsible for the name.

The town grew up around the church of Santa Coloma de Pujolric, the later Santa Coloma de Vinyoles said. In the 14th century, the Baron had built a wall around the city center and from then on it was known as Santa Coloma de Cent Elles.

In the 15th century the barons moved their headquarters to the nearby church and a century later they were called barons of Centelles. The city walls had three gates, of which the portal nou ( New Gate) is obtained as a single.

In 1875 the railway line Barcelona -Vic - Puigcerdà was opened, which runs through Centelles. The station was designed by the engineer Josep Foluon i Tudó in what was then French style.

Began a significant commercial and industrial development in the still predominantly farming town early in the 20th century. This took place mainly by the food and textile industry.

Since the 1960s, the city has witnessed a sharp increase in population due to the strong economy and internal migration.
