Černé jezero

The The Black Jezero ( Black Lake German ) is the largest glacier lake in the Bohemian Forest. He is in Czech territory in the field of Železná Ruda ( Cadastral Hojsova Straz ) and is the largest natural lake in the Czech Republic. He is surrounded by the 320 meter high rock wall Jezerní stěna. The bedrock is mica schist, covered by a nine -meter thick layer of sludge that has formed over thousands of years from the pollen of the surrounding trees.

The Black Lake is located less than one kilometer east of the German border. Therefore, the area of the public was up to the fall of the Iron Curtain hardly accessible. This fact was exploited in 1964 by the Czechoslovak secret service in 1964, when he boxes with old Nazi documents from the Reich Security Main Office in the lake sank along with the KGB in order to subsequently there to "discover". As part of the intelligence Operation Neptune, this operation should unmask superficially West German agents who were active in Eastern Europe, and cause the West German secret to cease cooperation with these agents.

The nature reserve Black Lake and Devil ( The Black a Čertovo ) was set up in 1911, when the territory to Austria - Hungary belonged.

The oldest pumped storage power plant in the Czech Republic was built here 1929-1930, with the lake as the upper reservoirs.

Between The Black Jezero and the 1.5 km southeast to Čertovo the main European watershed runs. During The Black Jezero how many other Czech lakes towards the Elbe drained, the Čertovo is just like the Bavarian cirque lakes on the Danube side of the watershed.
