Canadian Forces Base Winnipeg ( CFB Winnipeg ), ( IATA: YWG, ICAO: CYWG ), is a Canadian airport base near Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. The base is located in the military area of civil James Armstrong Richardson International Airport. On the CFB Winnipeg several airplane supporting units and training facilities are located. However, the main squadron is the 17 Wing Winnipeg, the Royal Canadian Air Force. On the base employed 3,600 military and 700 civilian personnel.

One of the buildings on the base is the Billy Bishop Building, which houses the headquarters of 1 Canadian Air Division ( 1CAD ) as well as the headquarters of the Canadian North American Aerospace Defense Command ( NORAD ).

History

Construction of the base was heralded by the Federal Government 's Canadian Air Board in 1922. The construction of the base was three years and was opened in 1925. The base was named immediately by the newly founded Royal Canadian Air Force RCAF station in Winnipeg.

Initially, the base served as winter quarters for the units that were stationed in Manitoba. During the Second World War, the base served as an important educational and training center for the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan ( BCATP ). During the period of more than 130,000 soldiers were trained in different fields. Which included pilots, navigators and radio operators. Furthermore, the base served as an important center of the repair machinery.

After the war, the base served as a training and education center for allies. After the military restructuring of the armed forces of the base in 1968 in CFB Winnipeg was renamed.
