Chai Wan

Chai Wan (Chinese柴湾; literally firewood bay ) is a district in the northeast of Hong Kong Hong Kong Iceland. An earlier place name is Sai Wan (西 湾Chinese; literally western bay ), which has been preserved, for example in the name of Sai Wan War Cemetery. The name Sai Wan (Chinese西 环) but also stands for a different district in the Central and Western District.

Chai Wan is part of the Eastern District. The place is located between Shau Kei Wan in the west and Cape Collinson in the east. Depending on the context, the districts Heng Fa Chuen and Siu Sai Wan may be meant as part of Chai Wan or as independent districts. The total population in the area about 180,000 inhabitants.

The Iceland Line of the Mass Transit Railway holds in Heng Fa Chuen Chai Wan and ends in the center. The Route 4 highway also leads on Heng Fa Chuen Chai Wan after. The Tai Tam Road leads to the Southern District to Stanley and Shek O.

History

Chai Wan is inhabited in the Qing Dynasty since the time of Emperor Qianlong. Until the 1940s, the population consisted mainly of Hakka in the six villages Law Uk, Uk Shing Lam Uk, Luk Uk, Sai Tsuen and Tai Peng. A traditional village house of a Hakkafamilie from the 18th century has been preserved as a Law Uk Folk Museum. In the second half of the 20th century there were major urban development projects for the construction of residential and industrial buildings. The bay was filled in for the purpose of land reclamation, only an enclosed cargo port of industrial plants has remained. Two milestones of this development is the completion of the two MTR stations and Iceland Eastern Corridor of Route 4

Heng Fa Chuen

Heng Fa Chuen (Chinese杏花村; literally apricot blossom village) is a residential area in the north Chai Wan, which was built in the 1980s. There live about 20,000 inhabitants in 50 high-rise buildings.

Siu Sai Wan

Siu Sai Wan (Chinese小 西 湾; literally small western bay ) is a residential area in the east of Wan Chai. One of the biggest houses the 60 -storey and 200 meters high, Iceland Resort. In Siu Sai Wan is the football stadium Siu Sai Wan Sports Ground. South of Siu Sai Wan is the detention center Cape Collinson Correctional Institution.

From 1951, the Royal Air Force ( RAF) in Siu Sai Wan Sai Wan Little 's base business to listen to the radio traffic of the People's Republic of China. 1964 gave the RAF the plant to the Government Communications Headquarters, which continued to operate together with the Australian Defence Signals Directorate. The facility moved in 1982 to a new location according to Chung Hom Kok. The buildings in Siu Sai Wan were still used by the British government for other purposes until they were demolished in 1988 to build residential buildings.
