Chamba district

The district Chamba (Hindi: चंबा जिला ) is a district in the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh. Seat of the district administration, the city is Chamba

The district Chamba Himachal Pradesh is located in the northwest at the foot of the Himalayas and is (clockwise) from Jammu and Kashmir ( west and north ), Ladakh, Lahaul and Bara Bangahal ( east ) and Kangra and Gurdaspur ( south ) surrounded. The district has an area of ​​6,522 square kilometers and 519 080 inhabitants ( 2011 census ).

Chamba is attested as state formation since the 6th century. The Principality of Chamba was temporarily under the suzerainty of Kashmir, the Great Mughals. After the First Sikh War, it was first placed under the sovereignty of Jammu, 1846-1947, there was a princely state under British suzerainty. After Indian independence Chamba became a district of the state of Himachal Pradesh.

The capital, Chamba is a cultural center of North India with major temples and a still living tradition in painting and bronze sculptures. Dalhousie is one of the former " Hill Stations " of the British and even today major tourist destination. The mountain town of Bharmour with temples dating from the 8th century is the starting point for the Hindu pilgrimage to the Manimahesh Kailash, one of the residences of the main Hindu god Shiva, next to the Kinner Kailash in Kinnaur and the Kailash ( Kang Rinpoche ) in the west of Tibet. The Bharmour region is therefore also Dev Bhumi, God's country called.
